You just have to get in the shop and see what you like in the end. And all these tellies die off after a point. Take a favourite DVD in with you that tests the thing out. Note - they won't let you play Kill Bill mass fight restaurant scene... So take Transormers as your back up :D

mebe... apparently R rated violence might scare the kiddies in the shop, no matter that you think it is a great test of the viewing & sound...

This is true to a point, but there's a lot of things you won't be able to tell by a quick viewing in the store with a DVD. Do your research on Google as well. Plus take in a Blu-ray to test. DVDs aren't a good test for current generation panels.

Bluerays are so turn of the millennia. If your tv is any good, bring a USB thumb drive with our favorite hd scene and plug it in.

But if your after plasma then blueray makes more sense.

our old 2004 Panasonic plasma is still going strong in a friend's house with no dead pixels...

I bet they would let you play it, the one thing I remember big time is the incredibly graphic movies they would have playing on the TVs in Courts, Best Denki etc...now of course put a mild sex scene in and you might be thrown out of the shop...

Whatever happened to Burbage?

Well that was a humbling experience - hit Courts and Norman's and saw so many screens of various sizes and prices that I came away more confused than anything. Strangely a lot of the newer ones that were large (46" and over) seemed cheaper than others of the same size and relative quality, FHD and HD-ready.

Thanks all, and FB for the ad. This is shopping weekend - for telley's and more shelving.

Picked up shelves at Howards and Giant, now want some parts to customise. There's a warehouse for Menova that looks interesting. If shelving can be thought of as interesting....

Back to TVs. I'm only looking at FHD, no 3D, and am now interested in something larger than a 43" (which I didn't see any, most are 40", 46" and 50), am open to Plasma, LED. Hopefully one that comes with a Soundbar as par of the deal.

So next TV question - Smart TV or not?

But no Tas, I don't shop that way - instead I agonise over the options until the Scot part in me allows my tightly-gripped hands to release the cash. But it's actually more about the educational journey, which for me is enjoyable.

Just in case you're not sorted yet, CNET have a good article on the differences between plasma, LED and LCD.

And the summary of that article is that Plasma is king, like i've been saying all along.

Though I agree with you that plasma is best, I think you'll find you chipped in way after everyone had said everything useful (i.e after about 12 hours of the original posting)
