I'm not convinced that those 'toy' speakers can sound anywhere near as good as 'real' speakers.

i wouldn't change my B&W for a set of those, that's for sure... baloo, however, seems to have to limit his choice to colour spectrum related preferences rather than audio quality.

I'm sure they won't sound as good as my current B&W DM600 series 5.1 setup,

But they'll be child proof and have a higher WAF.

The more reviews I read of the Anthony Gallo A'Diva the more keen I am. Heavy WAF as they have some very funky ceilings mounts for the rear:

Would generally agree with you, but read some of the Eclipse reviews

I'm surprised you experts don't build your own, then you can have them any colour you like.

I started the research way back then. Now it's time to purchase (co-inciding with a Reno).

On a related note, I'm thinking about music options for our house in Perth (bearing in mind we're very low tech).

We already have a separates system that we bought years ago, but it still sounds good. That will go in the library (which is open to the rest of the house) so that the music will go round the house but the speakers can be unobtrusive (without painting them white).

I've been looking for a cute, sexy mini system with decent sound quality and no obtrusive speakers or wires to use in the open plan family/dining/playroom/kitchen. B+W's (?) Zeppelin looks quite cute, but doesn't play CDs (ideally would play CDs and have ipod dock, but CDs are priority).

We also need to get a new TV (so will ask for recommendations nearer the time).

Then it occurred to me driving to work: if we got one of those virtual sound bar thingys, could we connect it to both the TV AND the DVD player, and then play CDs in the DVD player and get the sound through the sound bar?

If so, recommendations for sound bars (not too big as has to fit in TV (Chinese wedding) cabinet. Not Phillips or Toshiba as I don't buy those brands on principle.

Decisions decisions. The three sets below come in at around the same price. While I can find decent reviews of the Anthony Gallos, I can't find many reviews of the Morel or Cabasse. Sound wise the Morels just topped it.

Dunno......

Compared to a super-dooper expensive set, sure.

But compared to a micro-system of the same price?

Recognising that they cannot compete with super-expensive setups with lots of speakers, wires and stuff, We bought a couple of Philips soundbars last year (see this post for picture and link to review) and they've been just fine. They're multi-region capable too.

Easy. Forget the reviews - the reviewers aren't you. Which one did you like the most? That's the one to get.

Being partially deaf in on ear, I tend to use reviews to back up my thoughts.

English, Israeli or French.

Ok, down to two now, Gallo or Morel.

Do you need a sub-woofer with that? I had a quick look at sound bars in Harvey Norman the other day, but the salesman couldn't really speak English so we didn't get very far......

The Philips came with one - the power supply and amplifiers are inside it, and it has good bass. There's a fairly long cable between the sub and the soundbar, and the placement of the sub doesn't make much difference to the sound, so placement is easy.

Everything I've heard or seen from Philips has been a big let down. Sound quality, software, useability.....all very poor. Never seen one of their sound bars but so many other things, including that little robot vac that bif put up, were poor.

I like none of those above, baloo. But there again I don't have kids who can put their fingers through them....I don't like kids either.

My new Samsung Soundbar w/wireless Bass Subwoofer as part of the package is just fine for family room usage

Its fine.

In the living room we still have the tube driven Harmon Kardon Amp with old style stand up wood cabinet speakers which all costs 10 times the sound bar price & its certainly not 10 times better

This new micro sized stuff is actually aay-rey as they say down in Jamaica

OK, back to real speakers for a moment.

I've decided and I'm going to buy them unheard. Risky but I can't find anyone that says a bad word about them and because they are direct from manufacturer and he has amazingly low shipping rates, they become the #1 choice. High WAF too.

Orb Audio
People's choice Home Theatre Speaker System (I'm adding 2 more single Orbs to make it a 7.1 setup, wall and ceiling mounts)
