Going rate in Oz for 2nd hand goods?

Post by Kooky » 5th Jun, '10, 12:36

What would be your starting price for 2 year-old wardrobes? Mint condition.

What % of the original price would you say to your tight-fisted landlord who wouldn't put any in in the first place, but seems to have been convinced by his new agent that they'd be a good idea?

We spent $2699 on them (Yes I know this for a fact, and can itemise. )

Try for more, but secondhand value may be 60% or less for freestanding, more for built-in.

They were bought here. Made to be fitted but there's no way he'd have let us do that so they're free-standing.

We'd make use of some of them if we took them with us but they're 236cm tall and not easy to move. Also we can't go check out the lifts 'til we complete on Tuesday.

Feeling a bit miffed as the unit was advertised with "private storage cage" only to find out there's no guarantee we'll get one, and we'd have to pay rent on it anyway. Not enough to break the deal, but still a but shady. Interesting reading minutes of owners' corp meetings, too - our vendor got herself on the committee and then tried to get her cage for exclusive use. (Fail.) Another member got a bye-law changed to take over a visitor's parking space for his own use; not sure how he managed it but he was then bought off for $15k! Think I'll be getting myself on the committee PDQ.

K that is misrepresentation under Australian law. Might be worth a chat to your lawyer about that.
"I really love you" she said. "Is that the champagne talking" he asked. "No" she laughed. "That's me talking to the champagne"

To me the cost would be how much they would cost to replace. If you want/need them in the new place, then you would probably pay $2699 to replace them. Hence the current landlord can pay $2699.

If you would prefer to get rid of them, then however much you would be happy with.

Myself, I'd be hard pressed to sell them for anything less than your payment price considering you've only used them for 1-2 years.

I would say ask 2.5 but accept 2 if you really don't want to move them.

Edit: that price is for the landlord because he doesn't have to move them, they fit the house etc etc. If you were selling them outside I doubt you would get that much for them, and agree with about 60 - 65%, maybe 70% if in really mint condition, as the going rate for second hand furniture.

I've always sold stuff for half price just to get rid of it quickly, easily and fairly. But that means there's no bargaining at all, I hate that carry on and have given stuff away free rather to some greedy guts that want to rip me off.
