Need a pest control person

Post by Scrummy Mummy » 11th Nov, '09, 15:15

Can anyone recommend a pest control person who is NOT Eric the pest control guy?

We have a cockroach infestation and it transpires so do many people in our building so finally management is on the case. It's suspected it's due to a condo being built next door.

They're dealing with the problem in the basement, but I want my apartment sorted ASAP.

Eric quoted $1600 and said he's need to fumigate the whole place, and we'd all need to move out. He then said he'd try to reduce the cost for me just fumigating the kitchen, which would bring it down to $800. This all got me rather suspicious that I'm getting the ang moh service.

Another company (the ones that are dealing with the basement) said fumigation is only used for bed bugs and it would be a major PITA as we'd have to move out etc plus wash chemicals out of clothes etc.

I'm now looking for a 3rd opinion.

Any recommendations? Must speak good English so we can understand each other!

I see my English (ahem.. singlish) coming in very handy! ;-) Need any help - but don't think I can call Eric now as he'll know it's for you.

If you are coming to the drinks tonight, SMS may be able to help you.

I am indeed so will lok out for SMS.

Sate: Could communicate with Eric OK, but obviously not the other lot as they turned up with their squirting machine when I just wanted a quote. And the LL said the management was doing something about the basement car park, but I couldn't get out of the management exactly what and how they know it'll work.

I obviously do need to work on my Singlish, but you'd think when the agent said "they are fogging the car park" and I asked "When" that would be clear!

Eric is fine but I think he charges like a wounded bull, I was horrified at his prices.

I used ABJ pest management. 6382 2698. The lady who answers the phone speaks good English, though the cast of Malay lads who come round to spray and prod can be less communicative.

Try Sita Pest control and say you have been recommended by Batty - had dustmites & filter flies in my office and they charged $374.50 for that job - Tel 68623828.

Is there any reason why this is in the Review section rather than Practically Singapore section? Hmmmm....don't have rights to change it....

But no, have no pest control people. When I had a rat problem some came with some tape to refix the drain pipe they'd managed to break open. Fantastic.

There are a list of Pest control people in my links page (signature link). I'd recommend that you contact Killem Pest. (6896 6607) If you cannot get any joy from whoever takes your call (English comprehension-wise), then ask to speak with Mr. Harry Singh. He's Singaporean, but spent years in London before returning to Singapore 13 years ago. You'll not have any linguistic problems then. Just tell the first person you speak with to refer you to Harry and tell them that Ken told you to speak with him. (There are several companies on my list, of them I'm HR/Fin Mgr for Killem Pest, Active Pest, Dynamic Pest, Pro-enviro Services and Pestmanagers. If he can do it right he will. Otherwise, he'll tell you so. No worries.

Frankly, though, any fumigation you do in a condo unit, is only temporary unless there is not a common refuse disposal running vertically up the unit. Same goes for fire risers, electrical conduits breaching the walls, and so forth. But, HR & Finance is my bag, Harry's is pest control.

Thanks for the link SMS, may need it one day.

But, why do you say 'unless' here? Unless I got this mixed up with a double negative.

We had a problem 6 months ago when that was in fact the problem, and the condo management sprayed the disposal chute, a couple of times from our unit at our request and they did for free, which took care of the problem.

Has not reoccurred and Mrs. S. is finely no longer waiting for me to come home to throw the trash in there at night.

A condo will probably have a contract with a pest control company, so get the management co to call them. You should not have to pay extra as they will just bill the condo mgmt co

Normally, the condo's management should notify all the residents that fumigation is going to take place at such and such a time. Normally they will ask you to tape up your refuse chute doors to keep both the dying and escaping roaches out of your unit and to make sure the fatality rate is maximum during the fumigation process.

If you have a refuse chute within your unit or other breaches through the walls that will allow ingress from the outside, then you have an entrance for new cockroaches to invade your flat. Ergo, unless you do not have these things, fumigation of your unit alone is only temporary. Oh, I'm a simple farmboy, so it may well be a double negative - English grammar was never my strong point. If you have those things going into your unit, fumigation is only temporary. (does that sound right?) ;)

Thanks all. Batty's guy is coming tomorrow so I'll see what he says. Once I know what needs to be done I'll get my LL onto the management company to pay, since it's a "condo" problem now.

There is a shared refuse, but it's ALWAYS taped up. We never use it for that reason(and being on the ground floor it'd be worse). But I'm wondering if maybe there are cracks in the wall......Will see what the guy says and if necessary get a 4th opinion from Killem.

Well, talking about cracks, if your condo is anything like our condo, there are those nether regions in the tub cavity and the false ceilings. Dog only knows what's in there..

And SMS, wasn't having a dig, just wanted to be sure I understood what you meant.

I do recommend you call in professionals for this type of work. One hears such horror stories about people who try to tacke pest problems by themselves. I know an old lady who swallowed a fly. (I don't know why she swallowed a fly.)

It didn't end well.
