Kindle - who has one?

Post by slinky » 1st Mar, '12, 10:57

I'm looking at sending my mother a Kindle but I have a question: It looks like they all work on wifi now and she doesn't have wifi in her house at this point. Can you connect them to your computer to transfer purchased Kindle books to it? (I'd like to get her a wifi router, but I don't see how she'd be able to hook it up and get it working on her own, so a that's a project for another time)

I didn't realise how many versions there were.

[amazon-us=B0051QVESA]Amazon Kindle Page[/amazon-us] (with a gratuitous link back to singaporum)

Me me me me me!

Wifi is more important if you want to use the Kindle to purchase books. You can also purchase books through the Amazon webstore via pc but I think you have to do a manual transfer. Check out this FAQ

Here's the amazon link to Downloading Archived Items Without a Wireless Connection, so straight from the horses mouth.

Must say, I like the Kindle lots. I use it for all my reading now (unless I can't find the book in a Kindle format).

edit - I'm sure the link isn't supposed to look like that!

So I just add it like a normal URL rather than using the (amazon-uk=) button?

the amazon-uk and amazon-us are for products.

i.e.:

The Amazon UK Kindle Page for the kindle:
www. amazon. co.uk/Kindle-Wi-Fi-6-Ink-Display/dp/B0051QVF7A/ref=sr_tr_sr_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330574019&sr=8-1

You need the B0051QVF7A to get the bbcode to work

so [.amazon-uk=B0051QVF7A]UK Kindle[/.amazon-uk] without the "." will give you

[amazon-uk=B0051QVF7A]UK Kindle[/amazon-uk] which is the link with the singaporum tag attached.

Pain the arse really so I don't expect many to use ui.

You can still buy the 3G + Wifi version so she could download via 3G anyway.

Me! Get the 3G one and she can download anywhere. We've often bought Kindle books in bookshops, for example. Don't think I've ever used wifi on mine.

The 3G would be what I would want, but that would require her to get another sim card and/or a separate data plan and I really think that's more than she is up for at this point. I'll stick to the basic wifi version and she can purchase books via PC and transfer over. Her office likely has wifi and she could probably get some help using it there too. Eventually I'm going to figure out how to get her set up with wifi at home and either get her going with an iPhone or an iPod touch so she can use Face Time with us and with my brother's family. I want the Kindle for her now because she's having hip surgery in a couple weeks and will be laid up for a bit and in need of entertainment.

Baloo, just a quick check, I've made a few Amazon purchases via the link here, are you seeing US purchases come through?

1 book but some other stuff - not DVDs. How long does it take to show up? For one, I think I initially got to Amazon via a Google link and then bailed out and re-went in through the link here. I wonder if that screwed it up?

Ooh, hang on! It looks like the 3G service doesn't require a separate plan or cost anything within the US: "Unlike cell phones, with Kindle Touch 3G there are no monthly fees or commitments — Amazon pays for Kindle Touch 3G's wireless connectivity." Done. Problem solved, time to order [smilie=groovy.gif]

What do I have? It's one of the oldest ones. I was a bit puzzled when I first read this thread but I thought they must work differently these days and require you to have a wireless connection :?

I can buy books via my kindle, wherever I am, or my laptop.

It should show up whenever there an order is placed. Funds get credited when the item is shipped. All I see is what I mentioned above.

Kooky, I hadn't read enough about them before asking on here, so I made some incorrect assumptions. Looks like the 3G ones don't require that you pay for monthly 3G service to use them, so that may be what you have.

I'll have to tell you tomorrow. AdSense gets a bit confused with dates.

Was just about to say that! No mobile, sim, or even computer required.

Slinky, to solve your other issue, i.e., no WiFi why don't you get the Geek Squad from Best Buy to install her WiFi? There is a Best Buy around every corner (even in Indiana I suspect).
I guess we're not in Kansas anymore.

Thanks, Sluggo, my mother is in South Florida though ;) I may do that, but my brother thinks he might be able to do it remotely (I don't ask questions, he's his own geek squad when it comes to IT and electronics  We'll get something worked out when we're all together in June on the Cape.)
