Transfer iPad to PC
We have an iPad. It has videos on there that were synced via iTunes.
The files were deleted on the PC and now iTunes still shows the files names in the library but with an exclamation mark saying they can't be found.
The files are still on the iPad.
How can I copy the video files back to the PC ?
I thought Apple products were intuitive.

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
Played with that, and others, yesterday. This one kept crashing when trying to detect the iPad and it has a 20 file limit for the free version.
Ideally I don't want to have to pay $20+ just to let me copy my files from the iPad to my PC.

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
i thought synching the iPad would solve it, but you may not want to risk it, so you should be able to change a setting in iTunes that lets you use the iPad as a hard drive. the iPad will then show up in My Computer as a removable drive and you can browse through it. that should allow you to locate the movie files.
alternatively, if those movies were bought on iTunes, you should be able to reload them from the iTunes store without charge.

So did I, but nope.Morrolan wrote:i thought synching the iPad would solve it, but you may not want to risk it,
Yes, you used to be able to do that but Apple, in their wisdom, have locked down the ipad so you can only access photos taken on your iDevice from your PC when docked.so you should be able to change a setting in iTunes that lets you use the iPad as a hard drive. the iPad will then show up in My Computer as a removable drive and you can browse through it. that should allow you to locate the movie files.
They weren't bought on iTunes, but you knew that alreadyalternatively, if those movies were bought on iTunes, you should be able to reload them from the iTunes store without charge.

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
On that thread there are more people trying to find a solution than giving a solution.slinky wrote:OK, how about a look into similar issues on iPad forums: http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-help/365 ... oblem.html
It looks like 3rd party SW is the only solution. Friggin ridiculous really.

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
Why were the files deleted off the PC in the first place? Some setting in iTunes or what?

Can't you retrieve the files from your MacBook Air? Or your Time Capsule? you haven't got these? Then why do you have an iPad?

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
Trying to help a bit more now: when a hard drive crashed on my PC previously (when I hadn't backed up my iPod mp3/AAC files), I used a program called iPodDump (I think) in order transfer the files from the iPod back to the newly installed PC. Worked to some extent (though the files names were not as you would expect). On further import into iTunes with "Copy to itunes folder" option on, the files were moved into said folder and renamed correctly.
Would that work in this case?

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
Getting them off the iPad onto the PC is the issue. From my reading of the various tech and apple forums, the only way to achieve what I want to achieve is via 3rd party software.
What a joke.

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
Apple hobbled iOS so it only allows you to pull photos of an iDevice via any form of direct connect. It used to allow videos but I guess Steve's ghost didn't like that.

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
If it was one file it would be fine. It's 40Gb worth of kids videos.
It's not a major issue as I have the originals but I would need to recode them all to mp4 with the right resolution again. A right royal PITA, but not as much a PITA as iTunes/iOS/iWanttomakeyourlifehell
I just stupidly assumed I could sync back from an iPad to a PC via iTunes but it looks like it's a 1 way street.

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
so you can't create a torrent from the iPad files and then download to PC? Apple won't allow you to upload any media files via the internet? If not, can you simply change the file extension or package them as zip or rar and then upload? What about FTP sites like http://ge.tt/ ?

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
No, no and no. The ipad is a completely locked system. You can't even see the extensions of files.avatarless wrote:so you can't create a torrent from the iPad files and then download to PC? Re: Transfer iPad to PC
So, in summary, there is no easy way to do something that should be relatively simple.
Amazing.

Re: Transfer iPad to PC
I completely agree. But these were mentioned way back in 2010 and you still went ahead and bought one. You can only blame yourself!
There are ways to do it, it's gonna cost you a few $$. Maybe iDump can work, maybe you have to re-encode the files.
My new laptop is fantastic by the way!

My point is simple. What should be a simple straight forward task is impossible with an iDevice unless you buy 3rd party software or circumvent the OS's built in protection which may only work when docked and only until the next OS update.expat yorkshire wrote:Jail break takes 5 mins access via wifi 1 min .

Seriously ridiculous. Immersing oneself into an Apple only ecosystem must be like getting a lobotomy.
