And then there's the cricket..

Post by Tack » 23rd Feb, '08, 12:07

Watching NZv Eng on internet streaming now (Starhub cricket channel a waste of money by and large, only ok for India series..but the ads  ).

Cracking match on Tues, today not looking so good for Eng :( sixth wicket just fell for 196 with 4 overs left on a batting pitch, bowling lineup too weak to deliver today I feel.

Bring on the tests, I don't know about England but Tack certainly expects..

What's your thoughts on the IPL Tack ? I think I'm starting to look at 20/20 and the IPL the way people my age felt back when ODI and World Series was launched. It's just doesn't sit right.

I prefer 20/20 to ODI, but then I am a dinosaur cricketwise being an out and out Test fan. 20/20 seems to do the job of a good, easy to understand, intro to cricket, a format that kids can copy easily and one that fits many requirements timewise. The 20/20 world cup was great entertainment compared to the ODI one imo. ODI can be exciting (Tues NZ Eng draw was fantastic) but is a forgone conclusion far too early or has a long middle period of not much interest far too often. If it's not a good contest at least 20/20 does not drag it out!

As for IPL I have paid practically no attention to it so far..which says everything about my view.

I think that if you're going to have a short exciting version of cricket then you should make it as short and exciting as possible. It's worth remembering that ODIous cricket was essentially invented by television, and it's television that wants to keep it (ie they can sell lots of advertising at non-peak viewing times).

In the end, test cricket is about wickets and limited overs cricket is about runs. In my view we should bring back timeless tests and get rid of 50 over cricket as a format that only really demonstrated that the only exciting bits of the game were the first ten overs and the last ten overs of each innings. Guess what? Twenty 20.

I don't think I have ever watched a 20/20 match in it's entirity. I must make a point to do so one day.

Yet another game played in 'generous' spirit, by both players and the crowd by the sounds of it.

One spectator sitting in the Bill O'Reilly stand, Craig Woodbury, said Harbhajan also spat towards the crowd after they called him "a wanker". "He definitely made the monkey gestures and he spat towards us," Woodbury said. "It was a bit disgraceful really, especially after what happened here in the Test match [with Symonds].

"There are a lot of young people sitting here and it was inappropriate. He is a role model to a lot of people. If he wants respect he has to treat others with respect.
So, a sportsman spitting is inappropiate as young children were sitting therre. But calling someone a wanker is appropiate? Dickhead!

Very poor reporting from SMH. Very one-sided and really, if every scratch or your armpit is going to be a racist gesture, then we're really in trouble.

Quite frankly this tour has really put me off cricket. I can't be bothered trying to watch any matches nor am I too fussed about the results.

Think quite a few people feel that way, it's been disappointingly ugly.

Of course, if you want to find someone with sub-human intelligence, you should start with racists.

Eh?

All I'm saying is that racists are people of sub normal intelligence, it's practically a definition of them.

Speaking of yellow cards, it just isn't Symonds tournament, is it?

Good on him.

Looks like today's match might be close. Indians have the upper hand.

It's over. 8 for, 2.5 overs to go, 20 odd runs. No chance
