My grass parrots are breeding? Burb? M?

Post by Aliya » 28th Oct, '08, 11:17

In a moment of weakness I agreed to my maids request for a budgie, we have a spare huge cage we used for the baby squirrels. So I tottered off to the pet shop to get a freakin budgie. Found they dont have any (and they are $38 each now anyway!) but the pet shop lady who I know well said "I do have a pair of grass parrots, they are useless I bought them as a breeding pair but nothing". Well there they were in a smallish cage looking so depressed I couldnt beleive it. A rescue I thought! So home they came and are living in the huge cage outside. We have lots of trees around the house and lots of wildlife ie birds and the next door neighbour has birds outside as well. Suddenly they have cheered up and become very happy. Pet shop lady said they dont say anything - the male now sings like nothing else. He is gorgiss, green mainly with orange and blue and yellow. She is a pale yellow with sort of pale grey bits. They are about double the size of a budgie. We have called them Bert n Beryl.

I put a breeding box in the cage just in case.... well over the past two days she has disappeared and seems to be in the box all the time apart from nipping out to get some food. I saw him feeding her in it yesterday.

Are there eggs do you think? What % will they be viable and we end up with some baby birds?

"I really love you" she said. "Is that the champagne talking" he asked. "No" she laughed. "That's me talking to the champagne"

Bloody hell, you do like to make life complicated for yourself!

You've got rid of the friggin centipedes and snakes but you've kept the friggin beagles and now you've got friggin parrots.

Alamak! [smilie=rollingpin.gif]

Bugger orf I'm not a dumping ground for your unwanted animals :D

Just quickly looked at some websites, their gestation is 18 days and so if they are laying and they are viable I expect we will end up with some little chirps in about 16-18 days. To my horror and embarrassement they did actually have a bit of passion infront of a friends school age children. So it could be all on! Anyone want a baby Fwarrot?

The pigeons on my balcony are on egg number two in four months. They breed like, well, pigeons ...

I have been peering in, can see her sitting but obviously cant see any eggs and am not around when she is out. Will keep a beady eye on her but looks like they are breeding. All these babies!

My mother used to have the most evil, nasty parrot ever :o Honestly, this thing had to be the devil incarnate (or at least related [smilie=rotflmao.gif] ) It was a quaker parrot and it was a green, nasty bitch of a thing [smilie=rotflmao.gif] What's my point?? Well, I don't really have one, but if there is a slight one in there I think it's that there's no way in hell I'll ever have a weak enough moment to buy or otherwise acquire a freakin bird [smilie=spin.gif]

Well it is about 18 days over and no chicks although she is still sitting on the eggs.

Should I remove them and that will prompt them to lay another maybe fertile clutch?

OMG you lot, I shudder to think of the carnage and loss of life you two would cause at my place!

FM, why not? Have no issues in leaving them there, just uncertain what to do, she is burning herself out sitting on eggs that will not hatch, not healthy for her?
