Strontium as a Supplement

Post by Kooky » 17th Jun, '08, 12:14

Any of you science types done any work with Strontium?

Obviously, I have a new doctor; she's not at all impressed with my level of osteoporosis. The lovely Doc Lee wasn't either and decided I'm not absorbing all the calcium I take so quadrupled my dosage, which brings its own issues (especially when I already have a dodgy digestive system). This new one thinks I'm probably not absorbing my BHRT very well either.

We're going to experiment a little and I'm having some extra bloods done, but she did mention that Strontium has acquired a good rep over the last few years. I'll go googling, just thought at least FB or choc may have come across it.

Group I metal.

Presumably Kooky will be taking it as a salt of some kind.

Strontium Ranelate, from what I've read so far. Not radioactive. Allegedly.

Correct. I haven't decided to take it yet. Other drugs are being mentioned but you know I'm anti-drug. :( The best one, so I'm told, is Fosamax, but I couldn't start that in 2005 because of my elevated LFT results. They've been ok since I recovered from the Dengue blip (I think - haven't had them done for over a year so re-doing them) but I worry they will shoot up again.

So, screw up my liver with meds again, or potentially break so many bones I end up in a wheelchair? I know that sounds sensationalist but I'm "only" 45 and my osteoporosis is already classed as severe. All those supplements, BHRT, diet changes and weight-training and my bones are still deteriorating fast. When I told my new doc that I'd developed an irrational fear of falling over, and the wet leaves on Sydney's hills are not helping, she didn't even think I was mad.

but what has Fosamax to do with strontium? it contains none, as far as i can tell.

edited to add:
these seem to be the ones:
Strontium ranelate (marketed under the trade names Protelos, Osseor, Protos, Bivalos, Protaxos, Ossum) is registered for treatment of osteoporosis in many countries all over the world.

Fosamax comes under the heading "other drugs are being mentioned". I read up on it back then but will have to do so again.

BFG - to croak? No. Doesn't seem important since I stopped earning anything.

I'm with Canuck, I can't help but see that other word when I scan the topics list... :D

EDIT: and as a supplement. Can they do that?

If Kooks fell down the stairs and broke all her bones then the cats would at least have some to eat on for a while until someone discovered her body.

No scientific evidence but it is thought to help in cases like yours. Best of luck.
