England's first size 16 beauty queen

Normal ... at size 16 Chloe Marshall is average for a British woman.

A trainee beautician has become the first size 16 candidate to reach the finals of the Miss England competition.

Chloe Marshall, from Guildford, is 79.8 kilograms, 1.78 metres tall and has a 38DD bust. The 16-year-old beat a bevy of slimmer hopefuls to be crowned Miss Surrey.

"Everybody thinks you have to be a tall, slim blonde and I'm a curvy brunette," she said. "I want to show it is possible to be beautiful and not a standard size zero.

"The reaction I've had is great. Other girls have told me I have really boosted their confidence, which is terrific," said Chloe, who is the average size for a British woman.

Never mind all that, it also says that Jamie Lee Curtis is going to pose topless!!!

I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Good cause she has always been one to get the old BFG pulse racing, but bad if the reality doesn't match up to my fevered imagination.

What does UK size 16 translate to in US size? Anybody know?

38DD is humongous by most standards let alone for a 16 year old. Her cup runneth over! Dolly Parton is a 40DD after being surgically enhanced.

That's US size 14.
The US/UK size conversion is a little strange though, how do US size 2, 0 and 00 translate to UK sizes??? 0 (is there even a size 0 in UK female size?),-2 and -4??? Mad

well i got several suits and they are UK size 6 which is also labelled as US size 2. As I am quite big, and there are lots of people smaller than me, I don't think a size 0 is unfathomable... but you've definitely got to be naturally petit to wear it I think.

Edit: found a conversion for you:

US size 0 = UK size 4

I like the fact that it conveys a clear message to all girls/ladies that are struggling with body issues. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A PERFECT SIZE O TO BE BEAUTIFUL

That's only the conclusion you draw. Another one could be that a DD cup size can make up for a lot [smilie=oo.gif]. Or maybe she was already the slimmest girl...

I hear what you're saying but isn't it better to convey the message that you don't have to be beautiful, or parade around in beauty contests, to be a good/interesting/successful person?

UK 16 = US 12. I love US sizes; I just bought a SMALL top. [smilie=mango.gif]

I'm going to be unpopular here...I agree that the skinny minny promotion is just not right, and that the average is nothing like and should be nothing like size 8 to 10. And I think the girl looks attractive. BUT is it really quite right that the average is 16? I'd of thought 12-14 is a more healthy average to aim for as nation.

Nah, the UK is becoming a nation of fat lasses. And fat lads as well. I'd fit right in if I went back!

Though the winning chick above does seem a bit of a porker to win such a contest. Must have been due to the Dolly boobs. Gotta wonder if it's a good look or not in a bikini.....

I'm surprised there isn't more of a rant against beauty contests in general, or is it ok now that a non-anorexic girl won one ?

Re the UK and average sizes, it all depends upon which rag one reads, who did the survey and so on.

Must say, having spent some time back there last year, I did think that in general people seemed to be on the heavier side than previously but average size 16? Hmmmm.

I'm all for women being comfortable with their bodies, but these days it seems that things are going a bit too far. Some women are naturally small and some are naturally less so. The media has been widely and rightly criticised for convincing women that they need to be skinny to be attractive, but now we are almost seeing a backlash the other way. Now, everyone is saying it is OK to be bigger. Telling overweight women that it is OK to be fat is not all that much different from telling them that they need to be skinny. Being excessively over or underweight is unhealthy. The average woman (and man of course) in UK, US, Aus is overweight. Telling them that they are normal is actually pretty irresponsible

I am hardly skinny. I know that and I know exactly why - I drink too much and don't eat healthily enough. The fact that there are plenty of guys around who are more overweight doesn't change the fact that I am too.

I think that's where I was trying to come from, that it's irresponsible to normalise excess.
