Wolf (Goji) Berries - Superfood or Superfad?

Post by Kooky » 9th Apr, '08, 15:45

What do you think?

I've been using wolfberries in my weird Chinese recipes for a few months, but this week I have a very bad cold - another one, that's 3 in 6 months, never used to get these when I was unhealthy. :( (Alternatively it could be that I've disturbed a lot of mould whilst clearing out the bathroom.)

The Canuck chick told me to steep wolfberries and drink the liquor for the Vit C, and I've been doing that for a few days, plus I cooked with them last night. I've been slightly unwell since Thursday but I felt absolutely rank yesterday - streaming nose, sneezing, coughing, going hot and cold. I feel tons better today, but I can't decide if it's the wolfberry tea - I eat the berries too - or the Clarinase my non-drug doctor said I really needed, or even just nature taking its course.

Do you use/eat them? What do you think?

[smilie=langue2.gif] it's the dust disturbance I am sure, but then again you sound like you have what N had. :? and he doesn't take any gogi(wolf)berries.

taking vitamin C once you actually have a cold won't help one iota. in fact recent studies seem to indicate the super powers of vit C have been rather exaggerated.

i'd go with super FAD rather than anything else... [smilie=alc.gif]

Succinct and, in my view, correct Mr. M.

I vote fad. Drink rum instead, far more enjoyable.

Yep, keep it simple and avoid the fads... a hot lemsip with a large dram followed by a long sleep usually does the trick... :D

Well I did, but he is not a hot drink person, so doesn't work with him. I do agree with M that once you have a cold it isn't going to help much except to make you feel better drinking something hot and since you like the taste nice. But I do think it is better to ingest lemon, gojis and rum rather than lemsip, the sugar content in those is insane.
Plus I am a less drugs is better person :D

Now they're trying the same thing with Mangsosteen Extract [smilie=23_3.gif]
I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once!

I'd rather avoid drugs if at all possible and usually just support my immune system whilst nature does its thing (although this time I was so bad the doc gave me some, thought I must stress I didn't go to the doc for the cold, 'cos that would be very wimpy indeed).

I buy big packs for a few bucks at Giant, so no MLM going on where I'm concerned. :)

Anti-ageing? I wish.

Just to clarify, I'm eating the berries rather than expensive products made from them. How is that different from eating an orange?

However, I can now eat an orange! Two years of avoiding citrus fruits after being diagnosed as intolerant to them have paid off - my intolerance has almost disappeared.

[smilie=mango.gif] (not a dancing banana because I'm still quite intolerant to those)

I love wolfberries because they simply tastes good in Chinese soups. That said, as a rule of thumb, I avoid "Chinese" food cooked with wolfberries when I have the flu/cold because I find that they aggravate my illness. I don't know anything about what wolfberries are supposed to do, so please don't quote me on this.

Who cares? They are yummy and that is all that counts. Unfortunately they are VERY expensive here so I rarely buy them. If I buy them it is just because I like to munch on them.
