chiropractor/TCM recommendation pls

Post by Satellite » 7th May, '13, 21:45

So I twisted my right knee while carrying a mattress down the stairs. Now whenever I climb stairs, I can hear a crackling sound. And when I bend a certain ways, there is pain. Did an X-ray and MRI but it shows nothing torn or abnormal.

I am really bothered by this and was told by some physiotherapists that it may mean the knee is not aligned properly. That can't be good as the more it rubs against cartilage or what not, it would be just a matter of time before I may need knee cap surgery. So anyone know anybody who can help me untwist my knee!

I am desperate.

How about going for physical therapy? I find the PT can loosen up my knee and get it feeling pretty good (I have a torn ACL and will have surgery in July). He's also given me strengthening exercises, which depending on what all you've done, might help too. I've been going to Physiofocus at the Forum.

Thanks. the specialist did give me an appt for physiotherapy. But I want it cured, not relieved. And something is definitely wrong even though the MRi did not pick up on it, as it is not supposed to make such noises. I'm really worried that I may wear out my knee as I'll be needing to climb 3 storeys a few times a day very soon.

Anyway, hope your surgery goes well. My elder brother had a similar surgery on either his MCL or ACL and it was a day surgery so you'll be fine.

Physiotherapy (or at least the good ones) are not just about relieving the pain, but can also help improve the condition so the pain doesn't happen. It may be that it can not be cured, but they may give you exercises in order for you to strengthen the muscles to support the body.

Ensure you go to the physio regularly - if there is pain, I would suggest 2-3 times a week, as they can help relieve the and make you repeat the exercises regularly so they become good, useful exercises that you and your muscles remember and carry out at home, at work and even when out on the town.

Any tears in meniscus, ligaments or tendons would definitely show up on an MRI and if you've gone to a good orthopaed who sees this stuff regularly he'll know what he's looking at. However, that said, if you had the MRI when your knee was still swollen it can apparently be difficult to tell whether some spots are showing up due to fluid or if it's actually a meniscus tear. Mine showed a small spot on the meniscus that the doctor said could be a slight tear, but could also just be fluid. (No need for me to re-check though because he's going to see it all when I go in for surgery.) I'd proceed with physio and if it's still cracking a lot after time, it might be worth another MRI later. It's also good to remember that a sprain really does take time to heal and there's also the possibility that you have stretched some of the tendons and they need time to heal themselves (or are stretched tendons basically the definition of a sprain??). You should get good recommendations on what type of exercise you should be doing when you see the physio.

I'd strongly recommend Ziglak Fitness - http://www.ziklagfitness.com/

These guys really know their stuff. No personal experience but the athletes I know who've gone to Ziklag swear by them.

Try rubbing glucosamin cream on affected part daily, and slowly help move the knee a little at a time to exercise it. Take glucosamin tablets. Walk slowly and wear shoes with good support May help. Mine knee pains are much relieved with much care over time.
