a first? not really: Schiphol airport has a biometric gate for a year or 5 already (even if only voluntary for people who hate long queues).

As the article says - a first for compulsory biometric testing.

The company said the move had been necessitated by the design of Terminal 5, where international and domestic passengers share the same lounges and public areas after they have checked in.
Well, rather than make problems larger for passengers by introducing shit like this, why not separate the international and domestic passenger lounges?

Fuckwits.

edit - So, international passengers are not subject to it because they have to show passports to get onto he plane. Why not make photo ID compulsory for domestic passengers as well? Much cheaper than fingerprint machines!

Seems a bit sledgehammer/walnutty. Why don't they just make you show ID for domestic flights since that seems to be the issue?

I was told in my journalism student days that the greatest headline ever written was: "Sex change priest in mercy dash to save palace corgis".

I wrote a better one a few months later.

Such a load of b****************** merely identifying passengers does nothing to show what their intentions might be or just who they might be associated with. The arguments we hear for introducing these kind of checks are the same as those for the eventual introduction of id cards. Yet politicians amongst others in their usual mindless pomp and apparent oblivion to reality have failed to notice most of Europe has id cards for several years. Did that stop the Madrid bombings? Would that have stopped the London underground bombings since the culprits were UK nationals and were not subject to any id checks? I notice it never gets mentioned but biometrics can be stolen? Is any system foolproof? - of course not somebody will find a way to rumble it whatever it might be. In addition the larger a database gets the more room there is for errors and subsequent wrongful arrests and detention. I think by and large this a gimmick which gives the public a false sense of security, perhaps we will need a passport and a boarding pass to get on the train next.

Just seen the plans have been shelved for a while. Seems they breach the Data Protection Act

True. Maybe a few questions about Coronation Street would suffice.
