What to do in Dunedin? Or Auckland...

Post by daffodil » 27th Mar, '10, 09:46

I'll be spending a few days in Dunedin in June and looking for suggestions for things to see / do, plus accommodation recommendations, preferably in the City itself. What about the wineries - worth travelling to?

I'm guesing it's going to be pretty chilly at that time of year....

Cheers, Daff

I lov NZ but haven't been to Dunedin for many years. I do remember taking a walk along the clifftops to see the Albatross nesting there. That was a highlight for me.

The Otago peninsula nearby is stunning. I seem to remember there's a beach you can drive to see loads of penguins. We went horse riding near some castle/folly. Take a camera.

Yup, have a drive to Otago Peninsula, look at the seals and penguins - a quick wonder around the Octagon and perhaps the Larnach Castle - maybe explore the countryside around Dunedin. I remember enjoying the locally-grown strawberries and produce. Dunedin also has quite an impressive train station, from memory. :)

Didn't try the wineries last time.

That's all, I suppose. :P

Hmm, Dunedin not exactly jumping out for me at the moment and you're not helping there Fuzzy! :P

Plan is maybe changing to spending some time in Auckland instead, then heading to Dunedin just for the weekend.

The only reason I went down to Dunedin was to meet a couple of friends - I would rather spend time in Queenstown or Wanaka. :)

Umm, yeah. Dunedin = student town, freezing FREEZING cold... not a lot to do really except drink and drink some more!

There's a Cadbury factory there which is fun. That's honestly the only thing I can think of to do after countless visits to see my brother and for uni exchanges.

There might be some rugby on in June ....

"Wales are playing two Test matches against the All Blacks, the first in Dunedin on Saturday June 12th and the second in Hamilton on Saturday June 26th."

Enjoy the game.

Why thank you., FB
June 19th, for what's reported to be the AB's last test match at Carisbrook. Bit of Divine Intervention needed for The Boyos methinks ;)

SJ - rugby indeed. Can't think of too many other reasons to make the trek from Manila to Dunedin!

Welsh? OK, I did tell you off in the other thread, I suppose I had that insult coming!

The ref list isn't out yet so don't really know who I'd support. It's usually the linesman at these games....

Oooh, whatever will either team do without your support, eh?

Ok, so it's now looking like a few days in Auckland prior to the game and Dunedin just for the game. First time time in Auckland for me - are there any must do's?

We took a nice boat cruise around the harbor in Auckland & ate at a pretty good Mexican restaurant near the Sky Tower (we were really only there a day and a half). Nice city.

The wineries on Waiheke islands were nice. Food wasn't bad either. Just a short ferry ride from the ferry place

Mission Bay has heaps of good restaurants and cafes - I went to MKOP the last time I was there and enjoyed the food and the ambience; unpretentious and laid-back - very nice indeed.

Spent a week in Auckland during the 2005 Lions tour, same sort of time. Can I think of anything I enjoyed.....hmmmm.....nope, not even the Lions test!
