I have the following bookmarked:
http://www.hotelclub.com
http://www.wotif.com
http://www.ratestogo.com
http://www.quickbeds.com

I prefer instant booking...does anyone have any other good ones?

I've found priceline.com (donno the sg one) to have some real good bargains sometimes. The trick is to book at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance and to start laughably low. And it's way better for US metros than smaller cities.

How exactly does it work BHS? I've always wondered, is there a ball park figure one is supposed to bid for? What if its a fancy hotel, surely their rates would be higher, so where does one start figure wise?

Zeph, pick the hotel/s of your choice, from the list, in the city of your choice.

Enter credit card details and the dates you require, and the price you are willing to pay per night.

Priceline will book the room with your card details if the hotel agrees to your price. If not, they'll tell you to enter a new price. So you keep doing that until the hotel agrees to a price.

Some great bargains if you pick Courtyard by Marriot, and other newer lesser known spin offs

Most of the international chains have a best rate guarantee where if you can book a room cheaper (under the same conditions, timing etc) on a site that is not theirs, they will refund differences or give you points or something similar. If you've done your research & decided on one of these hotels, you are generally better booking direct on their website so you can get points. Some of the rates given to 3rd parties are not eligible for points.
Priceline can be risky as you never know what you are going to get until you pay. I've heard both good & bad stories, and I personally like to know where I'll be before paying.
