Phuket
It doesn't seem to be a very active sub-forum this one - so.... what's it like where I am? Yeh it's pretty nice. Nice beaches, nice hills and other scenery, yummy Thai curries - and so cheap, my life.

Re: Phuket
and here's another pic this time of Rawai beach - more a fisherman's beach rather than a sunbathing beach but a popular spot for both Thais and Westerners with loads of local fish eateries and loads of bars

Re: Phuket
Aw, we were in Rawai in July. I wish we had longer to spend there. I liked it better than the other beaches.

Re: Phuket
Awww BFG you don't holiday in Patong do you?
These pics are from the (relatively speaking) quieter southern end of Phuket and there's some terrific scenery down there, if you like that kind of thing. You can get even quieter still if you go to the North East of the island which has some fabulous views of the Phang Nga islands and very little development (yet!). Of course if you're looking for all-night revelling there is always Patong Beach.
Do I miss Katong? - ahhhh, you're expecting me to say No I suspect. Well, on balance, I would rather be here right now, but everywhere has its pros and cons. Yeh I miss just walking out of my home to go to places (have to drive everywhere here). I miss being able to write out a cheque in a few seconds (rather than spending half a morning at the bank trying to explain what you want and eventually getting a bank cheque - sigh). Mmmm, I'm struggling to think of anything else at this moment

Surprisingly, they very rarely accompany me on Rugby tours...

Re: Phuket
I just stopped counting my age. I die when I die, and have a birthday party when I want. Next one tonight. No you're not invited!
Patong has got Keith Floyd's restaurant. It's excellent. Therefore it's not just about the cheap whores.
PK: you used to be able to write cheques in seconds rather than having to go to a bank? Huh?!?!? So in Katong you can write a cheque but not where you are now? Where are you now then? Or is this a TLC conversation that's spilled over?

Re: Phuket
As we are on "retirement visas" we are not allowed to have a cheque book (yeh, funny innit?). In Singapore we were allowed cheque books of course. (Who said Singapore had all the rules??) We are allowed a bank "passbook", ATM cards, internet banking but NO chequebooks - it's a Thai thing. There are a lot of funny Thai things.

I don't think you need to tell Fat Bob that.phuketkaren wrote: There are a lot of funny Thai things.

Re: Phuket
what it's like down here.... continued.....
So we're all happy now, king's birthday tomorrow -public holiday- and flights coming in, flights going out, those stuck here going back home, those stuck in Bangkok waiting to "winter over" in phuket have arrived and it's all jolly jolly until Monday - well that's what everyone's thinking.
Spoke to a thai lady in a red top, actually I know her, and asked if she was a government supporter (err slightly tongue in cheek) and she said They're all a load of shite - government, PAD, the lot. Watch this space...

Re: Phuket
It's the low season
It's boring
It's raining
No tourists
No more friends/family visiting till high season
Nobody going out - recession/no money, dengue fears /chunga-gunga fears /H1N1 fears
Nobody in the bars except fat old ugly western blokes dribbling over the cash-strapped girlies
Rats are back
Hornets nest in the garden size of a rugby ball
Pest control team accidentally collided with cable box and now the TV's fecked up, so no TV tonight
Thai made (wonderfully built) Isuzu pickup got intermittent fault, sometimes chugs to a halt, sometimes not, garage no idea
Fed up with talking Thai
Aarghhh

But, unfortunately, halfway up the island for us. My chauffeur (Mr PK) only goes as far as Nikitas in Rawai on a Saturday night. Buy ya a beer in Nikitas if ya like, if we are here? <<away on "holiday" July 17 to 22>>Fat Bob wrote:See you there in a month. Floyd's on saturday night is always a goer!

Re: Phuket
Aw PK, sounds like you have the off season doldrums. I bet no one back home believes you could feel that way living in "paradise", they probably all think you are moaning for no good reason. We can sympathise with you.
Ooh, where are you off to on your holidays??

Okay... next time. About time we met some of you guys. Oh if anyone's coming down this way, you can take a look at this bar/eatery on Rawai beach.Fat Bob wrote:Hahahah, that's the weekend we're there! Oh, well, next time then. At worst next April. Probably before.

I think PP went to Rawai so I guess PP will know it. It's a bit quiet these days (recession etc etc etc) but it's a nice spot for lunch, nice views, the Thai snacks and meals are okay and, very unusually, not a girlie bar. Aah, thinking about it, maybe that wouldn't suit FB anyhow I think if it was Singaporean run, full of expats and educated Thais, it'd be the perfect spot.

Re: Phuket
Yes we have these doldrums and they get more frequent and Mr PK is worse than me now. But, hey ho, there's some good stuff in our paradise prison. The food's brilliant. The boating's great - be nice without the one hour drive to the marina, but we're working on that.Pinklepurr wrote:Aw PK, sounds like you have the off season doldrums. Well we're having a short break away for 5 days. I don't think I dare mention where 'cause, if Kooky sees this, she's going to weep uncontrollably with hysteria
