The Singaporum Awards ...best film /worst film 2009

Re: The Singaporum Awards ...best film /worst film 2009
They have always been possible, and have sometimes been used. But I haven't seen them used to such good effect in one movie.
Anyway, I've said why I liked it, why did you not like it?

Well I saw Avatar in glourious 3D haha. The 3D was very good. Is this the watershed I wonder, is this the movie that convinces everyone to make movies in 3D? Probably not, but it will certainly raise the bar for special effects movies. On the other hand, you could say that colour wasn't essential in many movie genres, but it still replaced black and white almost wholesale. It will be interesting to see what happens. It will be particularly interesting to see the first 3D non-special effects movie.
The movie itself wasn't good enough to replace Inglourious Basterds at the top though. The script was awful. It felt a bit like a remake of Jurassic Park. Is it better than Potter and the HB Prince? Probably not. I'd put them about equal for entertainment.

I'll be able to chirp in on this tomorrow, but must admit I'll be going into it now with high expectations given all the hype.

Ingourious Basterds - good war fiction movie, though as this one probably had more real-life people in than Tarantino's previous films, felt there was quite a lot of unbelievable stuff in it. I think much of the music was overly-dramatic, it's something that worked well previously but was rather tired in this movie. Didn't think anything done in the movie pushed any boundaries, and certainly didn't hail up to his previous movies, with my three favourites being Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. Still, a watchable movie that I enjoyed.
So yet to find an outstanding movie of 2009. Have Drag Me to Hell ready to watch.

About the same for me. To me, it had a bit of the look and feel of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.Kooky wrote:Saw that tonight. It was ok, not really my thing.canuck wrote:Sherlock Holmes, just cause I quite liked the whole thing.... saw it last night

Well I loved Sherlock and I loved Avatar, saw them both this weekend. Avatar in 3D was brilliant.

Best movie: Departures (Okuribito), Up
Worst movie: The French Kissers
Avatar's really enjoyable but the strong message of "Natur über Alles" is too strongly rammed down my throat!

Need to actually think about the best of the year but just came back from Avatar and it was better than expected. I wouldn't say it had a worthless story, especially when compared with 2012 and the like.
Was kinda like Obama, might fall short of the promise but the message and presentation are welcome ones.
The length was ok, except that the length made it more noticeable how bloody cold the theatre was, which I let the manager know in no uncertain terms that 20c refrigeration is not taking the customer experience seriously.
Up was good but not to where I would rave about it as much as others have.

Crappiest film of 2009: the Hangover tied with Night at the Museum 2.
Best film of 2009: at this point i would say Star Trek, as many others i haven't seen yet.

Sherlock Holmes was fun - I like Guy Ritchie and he was made it fun... sorry to the traditionalists... I am sure a remake with traditional focus would have grossed ten mil and made a generation of grandma's happy - instead they renewed Holmes and one cannot help but to see a new franchisee for Robert Downey Jnr.
Avartar - great in 3D but really just an average film. Even still I liked it and got my Rp100,000 worth.... cant believe cinema in Indo is more than Singapore... bizarre.
------
The Hangover rocked - it was so damn funny, crass and american... a true followup to Old School. Now I know it may not be ones cup of tea but worst film?

Agree about Sherlock Holmes. Watched it yesterday. Was a bit worried about a yank playing Sherlock but he did a good job of it.

Hangover wins Golden Globe.... I did smile... especially seeing Mike Tyson...
Robert Downey Jnr also won.... will be interesting to see the academy awards.
I like Ricky Gervais hosting.... the intro to Mel Gibson was funny.... it would a hard place to visit being Mel Gibson and his recent history but alas he is making movies again... Must say I can't handle seeing anything by Mel Gibson since i watched the passion... a pirated copy because there was no way I was giving a cent to watch a christian fundamentist snuff film

Both of these won Best Actress/Best Actor Golden Globes- Great FilmsBlindside is the true story of Michael Oher currently playing for the Baltimore Ravens. Sandra Bullock gives her best performance to date. A very uplifting story & a good way to spend two hours
Jeff Bridges does more or less the same in Crazy Heart a story . Jeff Bridges who to me always will be 'The Dude Abides' also give his best performance to date too. Nuanced is the word the critics use but it is basically on target as Jeff plays a down at his heels but-not-entirely-out musician in desperate need of redemption.
The Music for this was written by T Boone Burnett & Stephen Bruton, a respected guitarist, songwriter and singer who played with Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt and many others, but who remained little known outside the roots-music. Bruton died last week just when this movie opened so in many ways its a tribute to him (some say the story is loosely based on his later years)
Both great films Highly recommend
I wondered how Robert Downey Jr could win as M posted so I checked:
Bridges was best actor Drama
Downey best Actor - Comedy or Musical

My favourite movie of 2009 was Up.
