Afternoon tea/High tea recommendations

Post by sj23 » 14th Jul, '08, 11:41

I've got a girlfriend coming to visit from HK this week and she's really keen for us to catch up over high tea somewhere. We've done the Peninsula high tea in HK, so looking for something similar.

Any personal experiences/recommendations of hotels that do this really well? Raffles is the only one I have heard people talking about but even then I don't know anyone who's actually been. Which is better - Tiffin Room or Bar & Billiards Room?

Thanks in advance!

We've had some nice high teas at Goodwood Park. The selection of teas and food was great, and the service was unobtrusive but attentive. Maybe worth trying.

I like the Goodwood Park's high tea too - the English one is the one I've been to there (they also have - or used to have - a 'local high tea'). If you want a nice view (assuming it's not raining) you can try the high tea at the Equinox. We did that one once with visitors & it was pretty good too.

Thanks Bender and Slinky. Just had a look at them both - is Goodwood Park's high tea a buffet or a la carte menu?

Another vote for the Goodwood. Don't do Raffles; it's rubbish and full of tour groups. I'd also recommend the Shangri La but do check as I heard the lounge (is it Rose Verandah?) is being refurbed - I heard that from somebody on another forum to whom I recommended both of these. :)

the high tea at Rose Veranda at Shangri-La is a bit strange - a mish-mash of 'traditional' high tea food and very stodgy local grub! and the scones are rock-hard :(

Equinox
Shang (used to be very good - Furby may be more up to date)

Oh afternoon tea at the Penn. Dribble. I loves it.

I've done both and the Raffles one is in a gorgiss room of course - the place opp the writers bar - and it was lovely. I wouldnt bother to do the Tiffin Room one, that was horrible. And we did the Goodwood one recently as a team outing and it was fab, the scones were really yummy. On balance I would be inclined towards the Goodwood one.
"I really love you" she said. "Is that the champagne talking" he asked. "No" she laughed. "That's me talking to the champagne"

Admittedly I haven't done the Shangri La for a few years. Do they still have 99 teas?

edit: The Goodwood used to offer (for a fee) a glass of champagne to the Ladies. That was very civilised of them, I always thought.

and again: Acksherly I'm not convinced it was for a fee...

Sounds like Goodwood is the way to go then ;) I've heard their spa is really nice too, so perhaps facials in the morning followed by tea in the afternoon .... perfect :D

Thanks for the tips.

Diana, we went to the Goodwood and had afternoon tea at L'Espresso - I think it was $33+++ and goes from 2 - 5pm. Was english afternoon tea - very nice! Loved the scones and there was a decent selection of everything else. And a chocolate fountain :D No champers on the menu though, Kooky!
