Recommendations for Buying Groceries and Fresh Food

Post by neo » 17th Jan, '13, 12:34

Hello, long time no speak ;)

I was wondering if anyone could recommend good groceries stores, delicatessens or similar for fresh food.

A colleague from work is relocating to Singapore and the information I have is seriously out of date, and of course we never really got fresh food that often :D

I recall some people talking about good places for meats and bread in various locations, but couldn't recall where.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Foodies mart are good for meat. Cheap and decent.
So…if you wish to wish a wish, you may swish for fish with my Ish wish dish.

Best of the bread places I've found is Cedele, but I don't eat loads and not searched for others.

Foodie Market is good for meat (in Outram - seatch for it on Facebook), would be better if they accepted credit cards.

The Butchers in Holland Village is good for meat and sausages, and there are supposedly other butchers around town (Swiss Butchers, Hubers, Brazillian).

Fresh food - I buy mine at Cold Storage - average. Supposedly there are other places, I don't have the time or a maid to go to them.

I like Huber's Butcher at Dempsey and I know some people who like QB (http://www.qbfood.com.sg/path/) -- I haven't made it over there to check it out, but you can order online from them too.

Generally, I end up buying most things at Cold Storage or Marketplace, depending on where I am. Fair Price Finest at Bukit Timah Plaza was good in the past, but I don't have much occasion to be near there these days, so I haven't been lately. Some of the wet markets are good for fresh food. Fruit, Veg, fresh chicken that you can take home and freeze (as opposed to thawed chicken you get in the supermarket), and fish are all things I've gotten at wet markets and at better prices than Cold Storage. Ghim Moh is a good one and a lot of people like Tekka Market. HV is ok, but pretty small compared to others.

Just a general note, groceries are expensive here especially if you stick to a more Western diet, I think. It's easy to spend a ton of money on grocery shopping here. Even the things you are used to being inexpensive in your home country are often out of sight in price here. Things like raspberries and blueberries are usually ridiculously priced here (yeah, yeah, I know, they are imported and don't grow nearby). Earlier this week blueberries were on special in a big container for about $9.00 at Cold Storage. In the US, I'd fall down laughing at that price anytime of year, but here, I know that's a BARGAIN that I can only get for a short time each year. The rest of the year, we generally just don't have blueberries.

Foodies mart/market is QB's retail outlet.

We now use NTUC fairprice online. Cheaper than Cold Storage and you can see what's not in stock on their website.

Had a quick look at redmart but they didn't have some of the items we regularly order so we reverted back to NTUC. I think NTUC is cheaper than redmart too.

All perishable/fresh goods we buy at either Cold Storage / Market Place or NTUC Fairprice/Finest

I always liked the Swiss Butcher for fresh meats and Tekka Market for fresh fruit but like many people we didn't cook much at home when we lived in Singapore. There are just so many good and cheap places to eat out in Singapore. For regular groceries we shopped at Cold Storage and Jasons Market.
I guess we're not in Kansas anymore.

Cheeky git - we ate in more there than we do here. Which says a lot :D
