Intelligent Gift Giving vs Wasteful Giving - Resources, Sug
Does anyone out here feel the same way?
In my opinion, the way that we give gifts through our children’s childhood is completely wasteful. I read that by the time a child is 18, they have received anywhere from 15,000 to 30,000 in gifts through birthdays, holidays, graduations, etc
I mean why do we put so much emphasis on little toys, trinkets or gift certificates when we could actually be making significant contributions to our children’s future? (Saving for college, first car, etc)

Part of the parenthood pact is that you do both; lots of gifts while also saving for their future needs.HappyMomma wrote:little toys, trinkets or gift certificates when we could actually be making significant contributions to our children’s future? (Saving for college, first car, etc)

I thought gifts are to keep the little brat occupied? Do cheques or bank transfers have the same effect?

Don't cry son. I know you really wanted a Bendy Buzz Peeing Cat Robot for your birthday, but your mum and I decided to save for a Porsche for your 18th birthday instead

Lots of jokes here - kids buy junk, that's growing up. They can save, too. Finding lots of info and ideas here. We have Kidworth.com to help parents and kids track saving and spending online. Money comes in, you sit with your kid and identify how to spend it -- toys/games/clothes/etc but also savings/college/charity donating. When you and the kids get the hang of it, it becomes a good habit.
