A Moment of Silence - Remembrance Day

Post by Bender » 11th Nov, '08, 06:10

On 11 November 1918 at 11am the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. This year marks the 90th Anniversary of the Armistice, when Australians remember those who fought and died for our country in war and armed conflicts.

As a mark of respect to those who have died and suffered, Australians are encouraged to stop what they are doing at 11 am to observe one minute’s silence and reflect on the loss and suffering caused by war.

A National Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the Memorial this morning. More information from the War Memorial and the Department of Veteran's Affairs.

In Flander's Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flander's fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, tho poppies grow
In Flander's fields.

Liet. -Col. John McCrae

The Guardian has a heartbreaking excerpt from All Quiet on the Western Front.
