Mac PPT - will it work on a PC ?

Post by chocolate » 19th Oct, '11, 05:06

Hi

I have to go give a talk Thursday in Maidson and i've made my lovely presentation on my lovely Mac....

It should "translate" directly to a PC provided the software on the PC isn't MS 2003 correct???? (if I save it onto a USB and then load it onto the PC)

Thanking you

Miss Chocolate

Should do. Find a PC at work and check it out to be sure nothing gets shifted around or any animation is changed.

It will, of course, work better on a Mac. Because everything does.

Well yes I know that (:D) but that's assume the AV system can handle mac in preparation - I have bought my DVI and VGA adaptors with me :)

Just curious, why would you need the DVI and VGA adaptors?

Because Macs need adapters to use old-fashioned stuff.

Because it's better to sell them as accessories (for the manufacturer that is) than have them built-in

She needs VGA and DVI adaptors to view a PPT file in a PC? Am I missing something here?

Yes. She needs the adaptors to connect her Mac to a projector. The other alternative is transferring the ppt file to a Windows computer which has those adaptors built in. At least that's how I understand it

If the file is already on the PC why would she need the VGA/DVI cable?

In case the file doesn't travel well.

She wants to take her own laptop along and run the file from there, rather than risk the pc at the presentation not playing her file correctly.

Madison? Job interview? I spend several great years there. Nice town, a lot of really lovely people- transplants and salt-of-the-earth midwestern types, shitty weather.

Hi from Madison - OMG it's freezing - wasn't prepared for that!

Not a job interview - just moved to Boston for work!! I'm giving a talk tomorrow to postdocs at UW.

And yup - my ppt is on a mac, i'm going to assume the AV is old and wont have adapters for my mac plus my mac has almost ZERO ports for anything so if I don't bring an adapter I can't run it straight off this.
And also in case it doesn't transfer well onto a PC and that's the only thing they have...covering all bases :)

Spanks all!

Careful Tas. You'll be told that it's not Apple's fault, it's everyone elses fault.

There's two sides to it. If you don't want to hook your laptop up to a projector or external monitor, then why should you need the ports to do so? It'll save weight and money if you don't have them there, and with a lightweight computer, it's important. And if you do need to do it once in a while, then there's options to do so. On my windows-based laptop, I have a VGA and a HDMI port, neither of which have been used.

There's also the other side: wtf would you use such a device in a business setting when it doesn't have these simple ports? I use the ports on my work desktop quite a lot. But that's more down to the decision making of the person or company who is buying the computer rather than the features of the computer.

what JJ said. Also then it's in format ready for when people ask you to send you a copy of the presentation or say "here is my USB" give it to me now.

It's not the ports, it's the cables. The venue may have the cable, and then again the venue may not.

I can't remember seeing a projector with an Apple-ready port.
