The increased anti foreigner feeling

Post by expat yorkshire » 13th Aug, '11, 18:05

Local message boards can some time be quite disturbing :

http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BN ... 94137.html

In response to the story about Ms Beguia's apology for describing Singaporeans as "moronic" whose "loyalty" and "patriotism" will be dropped "at the first sign of trouble."

This is some of the response

Is that the picture of that idiot filipino? Confirmed? . Make sure next week you don't serve at the counter. Whenever me or my gang see you, we will walk over to you and spit at you.
NHC must take precautionary measures to prevent her from destroying patient records.

Hey Rachelle! I think I saw you loitering at Lucky Plaza, with a Bangladesh right in your arms
stupid whore better F back to your country and don't ever step on this place again, you bloody piece of rotten sh*t

This site is owned by the Staits Times but they seem to happy to let these comments go .....

There seems to be an increased anti foreigner and particularly anti PRC postings all over the internet . I don't know how much this reflects the general view of the population ....

Not too different from the AB, but at least there the abuse and animosity is from both sides of the fence.

ST condoning racist and abusive comments is nothing new. Just look at their forum comments or even Stomp.

I'm just glad that the ST isn't a mouthpiece for the government.

Ah ok, I just saw the asiaone url.

Yeah, Stomp's pretty extreme. I'm not sure I've seen a mainstream media outlet allow that sort of commentry to remain.

It surprises me that the government don't haul ST to court over them for inciting racial tension.

When the official line is that Singaporeans and Singapore are superior to everyone and every place, and government policy for decades is to lash out when someone says something you disagree with, it can hardly be surprising to read these comments.

There is a growing sense of discontent - no doubt about it and given the last election results and the closeness of many seats, PAP will have some genuine problems next election if they don't address key issues. The problem is that the sort of people who attack foreigners a lot of the time don't understand the need for them. This country is bloody expensive and the sense of entitlement runs up against the realities of what it means to make a life here.

A Filipino makes a minimum of $1800 a month - MIC's make at least $1k for basic laborers - these roles are not wanted by Singaporeans generally although unfortunately what happens a lot is that employers will pay local cashiers and general laborers around $1200 a month and then import a Filipino for $1800. If they paid the local $1800 they wouldnt have an issue and could more easily get staff but alas we all need to save money.

Well, that unfortunate piece of crap "mediation" over the cooking of curry hasn't helped. That story sums up, in very basic terms, universal "us versus them" fears about immigration. The good news is that for a country that has searched for a real sense of national unity for decades, it seems now it's found one.

I thought there were no Singaporeans, just Chinese, Indian and Malay people that lived in Singapore. Until Singapore itself stops its own racism at a Government and ID Card level, then why would you think its citizens should do anything else but be racist and xenophobic?

However, racism is one of the basic instincts that you really have to climb above. We have all been racist in our life. You know you have. Just ask if the Singapore version of racism is any worse than what you have in your own country. Or any better.....

The curry issue worries me. The ruling was shocking to start with - of course everybody must eat curry, it's the best food on the planet! Of course, seriously, everyone should be able to cook what they want, and curry is part of Singapore's heritage. I've shown my support on Facebook.

However some of the anti-mainlander comments it has prompted are very nasty, if predictable - and that's just what I've seen on friends' FB pages, made by their friends :(

One good thing to come out of it, I guess - Singaporean Indians may have moved up the pecking order. :?

After spending the morning feeling like I've been living under a rock, dunno must have been busy or too self absorbed or dense or whatever, maybe this is what comes to those of us with no tellys and who only read the ST when in a Starbucks or dentist office....scoured the internet for news of this curry debacle......came across the links below and more, what a shocker.

I had thought before, more so after reading the vitriol in the threads, that this place is about to implode. I thought the cost of living would send this place back into its formative years, now I wouldn't be surprised to see riots start to take place. So much for my PR.....

The increased anti-foreigner feeling is proportional to the huge increase in the number of foreigners here. Welcome to high-volume immigration, Singapore. There are good parts and bad parts.

If there was every anything that could unite Singaporeans, it's food.

I understand there is no ruling as such. The agreement was hammered out between the neighbours. What we don't know if how much coercion there was from the CMC
